During the first two weekends in September the XII Andalusian Polo Championship will be held in Rio Sotogrande golf and Los Pinos in the exclusive área of Sotogrande.

The first polo field in Sotogrande, on the Costa de la Luz, dates back to the year 1965. At that time, few could imagine that the area would become centre of attention of this sport in the Campo de Gibraltar. Each year it attracts more fans. The Santa Maria Polo Club was meant to be the headquarter, which has grown to become as one of Europe's most important centres in this sport.

However despite the importance of the polo club Sotogrande on the Costa de la Luz, in the European scene, the sport is still largely unknown to the public of this country. However as we already pointed out this is a sport with great tradition with a large number of Clubs and federated players. Perhaps the lack of advertisement or promotion could be the reason for the lack of knowledge of the public.

Andalusia has a big calendar of tournaments and matches throughout the whole year, starting the season in March and ending in October. The polo facilities in  Sotogrande on the Costa de la Luz, have made them the headquarters for the Championship of Andalusia. This tournament will take place the first two weekends of September, always on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday (days 2, 3 and 4 and 9, 10 and 11).

This Andalusian championship will be preceded by another popular tournament: The 40th International Tournament BMW, which is also celebrated in the fields of Santa Maria Polo Club, will serve as a unique appetizer for the Championship of Andalusia, in the year 2011, which is reaching its twelfth edition.

The tournament is very exiting, and if we look back we could see a breath-taking finale with comebacks and a lot of tension. Then, the polo facilities of Sotogrande on the Costa de la Luz, witnessed an encounter between Woodchester, Craig and Kaie McKinney, Mario Gomez and Lawrence Isola, and more Flint, Richard Fagan, Torreguitar Santi, Luis Gabriel Aguirre Domecq. The duel was finally decided in the extra chukka thanks to a goal from Mario Gomez who gave the victory to Woodchester by 7 to 6. This quartet went into the last chukka with the score 5-3 in favour, but in just three minutes, Silex did put three goals past them. The young Katie McKinney, daughter of his teammate Craig, equalized for Mario Gomez and in the overtime victory was won for his team.

The Championship of Andalusia, as usual brings faithful followers of the sport to the fields of Los Pinos and Rio Sotogrande.

Fans, that come from far away, can choose from a wide range of hotels in the area allowing them not only to attend the tournament, but also able to visit this great southern Spanish area.
